Is 42:1-4, 6-7 • Ps 29 • Acts 10:34-38
[or Is 40:1-5, 9-11 • Ps 104 • Ti 2:11-14; 3:4-7]
Lk 3:15-16, 21-22

15The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

21After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

January 9, 2016 (Saturday)

St. Basilisa

Saturday after Epiphany

1 Jn 5:14-21 • Ps 149 • Jn 3:22-30

22Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing. 23John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized, 24for John had not yet been imprisoned. 25Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew about ceremonial washings. 26So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.” 27John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven. 28You yourselves can testify that I said that I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him. 29The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete. 30He must increase; I must decrease.”

January 8, 2016 (Friday)

St. Gudula
Friday after Epiphany

1 Jn 5:5-13 • Ps 147

Lk 5:12-16

12It happened that there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where Jesus was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said, “Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” 13Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately. 14Then he ordered him not to tell anyone, but, “Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” 15The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, 16but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.
