Intramuros, Manila—Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, launched the 4th Saint Paul National Bible Quiz at the Arzobispado de Manila, Intramuros, in the morning of January 19, 2013. In his inspirational message to the members of the Society of Saint Paul, their collaborators, and Bible Quiz sponsors, the Cardinal acknowledged their efforts to bring the Word of God especially to young people. Taking the challenge of Pope Benedict XVI’s Porta Fidei in the Year of Faith, the Cardinal noted that it is the Lord who opens “the door of faith” and invites us to enter. It really hurts, as life’s experience tells us, if we open the door and people do not enter. The Word of God in Scriptures is a door that we open to the young who are presented with many other doors in a secular society. If we go to the young and invite them in, if we open the Word of God to them and address their desires, we will discover their hearts are open to God.

Ms. Marlu Balmaceda of SGV & Company hosted the short program of the launching.

The audience was shown an audio-visual presentation of the 3rd National Bible Quiz (SPNBQ 2012) that covers the “race to the finish”: the elimination rounds, the regional finals, and the championship. Copies of the Souvenir Program that features the entire competition were also distributed.

Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SPNBQ, reviewed the events of the last competition and shared what lies ahead. The 4th BQ will expand to Bicol and Dumaguete City. Preparations are also made for “St. Paul Bible Quiz on the Air” that will be aired at Radio Veritas in early afternoon of Sunday. This will involve parishes and trans-parochial communities. Fr. Domie then emphasized the Lord’s command to teach his saving acts to children and grandchildren (Dt 4:9).

Mr. Nelson Madrid, the guest performer, rendered two Tagalog songs as breaker.

The theme for the 4th NBQB is “Live the Word, Build a Better World.” Ms. Maria Goolsby of UnionBank presented this as a challenge in her response. She noted that in the United States and in many other places, God and his Word are being set aside. She then challenged the benefactor and sponsors to do more for the Word. The work cannot be entrusted wholly to priests and religious. The lay faithful should be more active to help build a better world for the future generations. The Bible Quiz should be sponsored not just by institutions but also by individuals.

Fr. Cris Cellan, SSP, Director General for the Apostolate, explained the contents of the Sponsor Kit and invited everyone to double their efforts in the days ahead.

Fr. Jose Aripio, the SSP Provincial Superior thanked and encouraged everyone in his closing remarks.
